Abstract
The clinical significance of asymptomatic bacteriuria was in the coincidental complication of pyelonephritis during the course of pregnancy and puerperium and also in the prevention of prematurity.and progressive renal damage.
We have studied the incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria of 150 term pregnancies by means of bacterial colony count and screening method such -as Gr iess test-and Modified Griess test which is simple and highly reliable.
We also studied the asymptomatic bacteriuria related to age, parity, blood pressure, pyelonephritis, prematurity and spontaneous healing.
The results were as follow:
1. The incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria among 150 term pregnancies was 10. 6% (16 cases).
2. The positive Griess test was seen in 16 cases and it¢¥s reliability was 81%. Griess false negative was seen in 3 cases (19%) and false positive was seen in 3 cases (19%).
3. Positive modified Griess test was seeen in 18 cases and it¢¥s reliability was 94%. Modified Griess false negative was seen in 1 case (6%) and Modified Griess false positive was seen in 2cases (17%).
4. The most predominant organism was E. coli. with an incidence of 81%.
5. The age distribution was from 24 to 34. Primiparas were 10 cases among 16 cases.
The 16 cases except 1 preeclampsia showed normal range of blood pressure.
6. The incidence of prematurity was 6.3% among the asymptomatic bacteriurics compared with 9% in the control group.
7. 3 cases (19%) revealed past history of urinary tract infection. 4 cases (28%) showed an evidence of urinary tract infection on the 3rd month of postpartum and I case of them showed typical pyelonephritis.
8. Spontaneous healing occurred in 1 case on the second month of postpartum.
